In this post, we are going to discuss how we can help you track Google Phone Call Forwarding Conversions the right way when using Unbounce. This method can also be applied to other websites so stay tuned.
What is Google Phone Call Forwarding?
Google Phone Call Forwarding allows you to track Google Ads Conversions for Phone Call Durations that come from your Google Ads Campaigns.
For example, if someone clicks on your ad and lands on your website, if they call a number that is displayed on your website page there is no way to to track & link that conversion back to Google Ads unless you set up Google Phone Call Forwarding Conversion Tracking.
What this allows you to do is:
- You can tell Google that you want to count a phone call as a conversion if the phone call lasts for a specific amount of time (examples being 5 seconds, 20 seconds, 45 seconds etc.)
- When a user clicks your ad and lands on your website, your phone number that is displayed on your website will be changed to a random number (aka a forwarding number) that is specific / unique to a single user (the person that clicked the ad).
- If the user dials the number, they will get routed to your original phone number and Google will be able to know whether that phone call came as a result from a Google Ad or not.
How To Track Google Phone Call Forwarding Conversions On Unbounce
Firstly, to track Google Phone Call Forwarding on any website, in my opinion, the easiest & best way to implement it is by using Google Tag Manager.
Even if you know how to use Google Tag Manager, there are certain aspects of tracking that you will not be able to do without being a developer, and I will explain that to you next.
If you have a Phone Call Button with a Link so that the user can click the button on mobile and it will open up the phone number for the user to dial for example, then the standard set up is not going to work.
The screenshot below is an example of a Phone Call Button. The issue with the normal set up is that Google Tag Manager will replace the Phone Number with a Google Forwarding Number as “text” on the button, but that does not change the number inside of the actual button link itself.
Due to this, there is no easy way to explain how to set the Phone Call Forward tracking up properly without having a developer to help you dynamically insert phone numbers into the links that also match up with the Google Forwarding Numbers.
